Nuestras Enseñanzas de Prosperidad Hace poco estaba buscando en Internet y me encontré un titular: ¿Enseña la Biblia la prosperidad?, Joel Osteen Versus Rick Warren. Decidí indagar un poco más. Cito aquí las dos posiciones básicas de estos dos ministros famosos, cada uno con miles de seguidores. Joel Osteen dice:"¿Quiere Dios que seamos ricos?", Pregunta. "Cuando oigo la palabra rico, creo que la gente dice, 'Bueno, él está predicando que todo el mundo va a ser un millonario." No creo que eso lo que estoy diciendo. "Más bien, explica," yo predico que cualquiera puede mejorar su vida . Creo que Dios quiere que seamos prósperos. Creo que él quiere que seamos felices. Para mí, es necesario tener dinero para pagar sus cuentas. Creo que Dios quiere que nosotros enviemos a nuestros hijos a la universidad. Creo que él quiere que seamos una bendición para otras personas. Pero no creo que yo diría que Dios quiere que seamos ricos. Todo es relativo, ¿no? " Rick Warren dice:"Esta idea de que Dios quiere que todos sean ricos?", "Hay una sola palabra para eso: tonterías. Se trata de crear un ídolo falso. Nuestro valor como seres humanos no se mide por la cantidad de dinero que tenemos en nuestra cuenta bancaria. Puedo mostrarle a millones de fieles seguidores de Cristo que viven en la pobreza. ¿Por qué no todos en la iglesia son millonarios? "Así que la pregunta esta mañana es la siguiente: Cual es la posición de Unity en cuanto a prosperidad se refiere? ¿Cómo nos relacionamos con Dios y la Biblia? Creo que la razón de que estos dos pastores, los cuales tienen muy buenas intenciones, chocan en cuanto a esta posición se refiere, se debe a que ambos están buscando un Dios como alguien o como un ser que hace cosas para nosotros o que quiere que nosotros seamos de una forma u otra. LO QUE ENSEÑA UNITY SOBRE LA PROSPERIDAD La primera distinción importante que tenemos que hacer es nuestra creencia en Dios como un espíritu el cual obra en nosotros, a través de nosotros, alrededor de nosotros y como nosotros. Somos hijos de Dios, creados a la imagen y semejanza de Dios. Como tal, somos una extensión de lo que Dios es. Además, creemos que hay una sola mente y la mente Dios, se individualiza en nosotros. Ahora bien, para mí está bastante claro el que cuando Rick Warren dice: "Yo puedo mostrar a millones de fieles seguidores de Cristo que viven en la pobreza", que estos millones de fieles seguidores, pueden estar asistiendo a la iglesia, se pueden estar rezando todos los días, pueden estar hasta incluso diezmando. Sin embargo, hay una cosa que falta. Y es que sus pensamientos no están siendo congruentes con la prosperidad que desean experimentar. Existe una relación directa entre los pensamientos que tengo en mi mente y las cosas que estoy experimentando. Yo crecí con las mismas enseñanzas y los mismos paradigmas que la mayoría de la gente creció. Lo de siempre: Me dijeron cosas como el dinero no crece en los árboles, el dinero es la raíz de todo mal, hay que trabajar muy duro por su dinero, etcétera, y etcétera. Y sí, yo estaba trabajando muy duro, pero al mismo tiempo, estaba hablando y quejándome de lo mal que estaba, me quejaba sobre la economía, sobre las oportunidades que otras personas habían tenido y yo no etc., etc. ¿Suena eso familiar? Por supuesto que sí. Todos hemos hecho lo mismo ¿Cuál entonces es ese ámbito de posibilidades infinitas al cual Jesús llamó el Reino de los Cielos y el cual Jesús localizó dentro de nosotros. Yo tengo la certeza de que Jesús se refería al potencial infinito que encontramos en nuestras mentes. Yo pienso que estaba hablando de nuestras mentes, porque sabemos más allá de toda duda razonable, que lo que cosechamos en nuestra mente consciente y en nuestra mente sub-consciente, tarde o temprano busca algún tipo de manifestación externa. Joseph Murphy en su libro El Poder de la Mente Subconsciente nos dice: Cuando su mente piensa correctamente, cuando usted comprende la verdad, cuando los pensamientos depositados en su mente subconsciente son constructivos, armoniosos y pacíficos, el poder mágico de su subconsciente va a responder y crear condiciones armoniosas, entornos agradables, y lo mejor de todo . Cuando usted comienza a controlar sus procesos de pensamiento, puede aplicar los poderes de su subconsciente a cualquier problema o dificultad. En otras palabras, usted realmente va a estar conscientemente cooperando con el poder infinito y la ley omnipotente, que rige todas las cosas. Las personas durante el tiempo de Jesús no tenían vida que pudiéramos clasificar como abundantes. Sus vidas eran vidas de opresión y de pobreza, escasez y limitación . Ellos, en su comprensión limitada pensaban que su suerte estaba echada y que no podían hacer nada al respecto. Pero Jesús les trajo una nueva enseñanza. Dios ya no era un tirano opresor. El Cielo estaba al alcance de ellos. Jesús les dijo a la gente y a nosotros por extensión que era posible el tener una vida de abundancia. En muchos aspectos, comparo Unity y al nuevo pensar en general, con Jesús. Antes de que alguien me acuse de blasfemia, permítanme explicarles. La temática principal del mensaje de Jesús fue el tener un cambio en conciencia. Eventualmente ese cambio de conciencia se produjo y de ahí nació la fe Cristiana. Unity tomó el mensaje de Jesús y lo organizó en unos principios básicos que todos podemos poner a prueba. Si aplicamos estos principios mentales y espirituales podemos vivir vidas prósperas, sanas y abundantes. De la misma manera que las personas durante el tiempo de Jesús, vieron en el Mesías la persona que los podía liberar de una vida de opresión y limitación, Unity nos enseña que no es necesario vivir de acuerdo a las cartas que nos fueron dadas al nacer; podemos cambiar eso. No hace falta ser de tal palo tal astilla; podemos cambiar eso. No necesitamos tener la misma condición médica que prevalece en nuestra familia. Podemos cambiar eso. No tenemos que luchar al igual que nuestros padres lucharon. Podemos cambiar eso. Cuando nos separamos en conciencia de nuestra Fuente, (es decir, Dios) entonces experimentamos carencia y hambre como el hijo pródigo en el relato bíblico experimentó carencia y hambre. Pero, también como el hijo pródigo, nos podemos levantar, elevar nuestra conciencia, y decir: Yo iré a mi padre, (voy a ir a mi fuente) y decir que he pecado contra ti (me he sentido que estas separado de mí y yo estoy separado de ti, Dios.) Y, como en el hijo pródigo, nuestro Padre celestial se regocijará y nuestras vidas serán restauradas a una vida de prosperidad y abundancia. Our Prosperity Teachings I recently was searching on the Internet and bumped into a headline that read: Does the Bible Teach prosperity?, Joel Osteen Versus Rick Warren. I decided to read further. I quote here the two basic positions of these two very popular ministers, each one having thousands of followers. Joel Osteen says: “Does God want us to be rich?” he asks. “When I hear that word rich, I think people say, ‘Well, he’s preaching that everybody’s going to be a millionaire.’ I don’t think that’s it.” Rather, he explains, “I preach that anybody can improve their lives. I think God wants us to be prosperous. I think he wants us to be happy. To me, you need to have money to pay your bills. I think God wants us to send our kids to college. I think he wants us to be a blessing to other people. But I don’t think I’d say God wants us to be rich. It’s all relative, isn’t it?” Rick Warren says: “This idea that God wants everybody to be wealthy?”, [Rick] Warren snorts. “There is a word for that: baloney. It’s creating a false idol. You don’t measure your self-worth by your net worth. I can show you millions of faithful followers of Christ who live in poverty. Why isn’t everyone in the church a millionaire?” So the question this morning is the following: What does Unity say about prosperity? HOW DO WE RELATE TO GOD AND THE BIBLE I believe that the reason that these two well intentioned pastors are clashing in this position, is because they both are looking a God as someone or as a “being” that does things for you, or want you to be one way or the other. WHAT UNITY TEACHES ABOUT PROSPERITY The first important distinction that we need to make is our belief that God works in, around, through and as us. We teach that we are children of God created after God’s image and likeness. As such, we are an extension of everything that God is. Furthermore, we believe that there is only one MIND and that is the mind of God which is individualized in us. Now, it is very clear to me when Rick Warren says: “I can show you millions of faithful followers of Christ who live in poverty” that these millions of faithful followers, may be going to church, may be praying every day, they might even be tithing. Yet, there is one thing that is missing. And that is that their thoughts are not being congruent with the prosperity that they wish to experience. There is a direct relationship between the thoughts that I hold in my mind and the things that I experience. I grew up with the same teachings and the same paradigms and teachings that most people grew up. You know the drill: I heard things such as, money does not grow up in trees, money is the root of all evil, you must work very hard for your money, etcetera, and etcetera. And yes, I was working very hard but at the same time, I was whining and complaining about how bad things were, about the economy, about the breaks that other people got and I didn’t, etc., etc. Sounds familiar? Of course it does. It is your story and it is my story. What then is this field of infinite possibilities that Jesus called the Kingdom of God and that Jesus placed within us? I am certain that Jesus was referring to the infinite potential that we find in our minds, because we know beyond any reasonable doubt that what we grow in our conscious mind and subconscious mind, eventually will seek some kind of external manifestation. Joseph Murphy in his book The Power of Subconscious Mind says: When your mind thinks correctly, when you understand the truth, when the thoughts deposited in your subconscious mind are constructive, harmonious, and peaceful, the magic working power of your subconscious will respond and bring about harmonious conditions, agreeable surroundings, and the best of everything. When you begin to control your thought processes, you can apply the powers of your subconscious to any problem or difficulty. In other words, you will actually be consciously cooperating with the infinite power and omnipotent law, which governs all things. People at the time of Jesus did not have a great life. Their lives were not abundant by a any stretch of the imagination. Their lives were lives of oppression and poverty, lack and limitation. This people, in their limited understanding, thought that their fate was sealed and they could not do anything about it. But Jesus brought a new teaching. God was no longer an oppressive tyrant. Heaven was no longer an unattainable goal. Jesus told them, and us by extension, that a life of abundance was possible. In many respects, I compare Unity and the New Thought teachings in general, with Jesus. Before anyone accuses me of blasphemy, let me explain. Jesus message was about a shift in consciousness. Actually, this change in consciousness, this new way of thinking, eventually hit critical mass and became the Christian faith. Unity took the message of Jesus and organized it in a few basic principles that we can all put to the test. If we apply these principles mentally and spiritually, our lives can be prosperous, healthy and abundant. In the same way that people during the time of Jesus, saw in the Messiah the person who could free them from a life of oppression and limitation, Unity teaches that it is not necessary to live according to the cards we were given at birth , we can change that. We do not have to be a chip of the old block. We can change that. We do not need to have the same medical condition that prevails in our family. We can change that. We do not have to struggle just like our parents struggled. We can change that. When in consciousness we separate ourselves from our Source (ie, God) then we experience lack and hunger as the prodigal son in the Gospel story experienced deprivation and hunger. But, just like the prodigal son, we can rise, raise our consciousness, and say: I go to my father, (I'll go to my source) and say that I have sinned against you (I have felt that you are separate from me and I am separated from you, God.) And like the prodigal son, our heavenly Father will rejoice ( we get back in alignment) and our lives will be restored to a life of prosperity and abundance. We always have a choice: be rich and prosperous, or being poor. What will be your choice? God bless.

Are the times we are living in different than the times when Jesus walked the face of the earth?  Let's see, people struggling financially and seeking answers, check; incurable diseases, check; politics, check; How about religious legalists telling people how to live their lives while not practicing their own teachings? Let's check that too!.
 
The Unity message of healing and prosperity has inspired millions since its humble beginnings in 1889. Our teachings are as applicable today as they were then. Perhaps as a movement we have not done much in terms of social action, feeding the needy, etc. That seems to be changing, thanks God.
 
But, my question is, what can you and I do? What would be the most effective thing that we could do to help ease the pain of those that are struggling and hurting?
 
This Sunday, we will ponder some of these questions.
